It’s a Brisbane Thing

stefan

So I was in Brisbane on the weekend, and what a funny place it is.

For those non-Aussies reading this, Southern Queensland feels kind of like Southern California – a suburban conglomeration of freeways and shopping malls populated by full of big personalities with even bigger dreams.

Hairdresser Stefan Ackerie is one such personality.  Stefan moved from Lebanon to Adelaide at the age of 17, already with some hairdressing experience garnered from his father.  He worked in Adelaide for a few years before being transferred to the Sunshine State where he begun to build his empire throughout regional Queensland and, eventually, Brisvegas.

Today he also owns a restaurant, food vans, a race boat and the skyneedle (below), a bizarre cultish tower originally built for Expo ’88, and since relocated and topped with Stefan’s signature rainbow motif.

Apparently Stefan’s as straight as they come. But between the rainbow flag, pink boats and the whole hairdresser thing, the jury’s still out.  Maybe it’s just a Queensland thing.
