Tribeca is about as close to the GFC as you can get. There you will find an entire region of Manhattan, recently populated by nouveau riche 30-somethings, most of them (once) employed in banking and finance, insurance, and the like. And now it is home to an eye-popping new building, 56Leonard.
There’s no doubting that 56Leonard is a good looking bird. In its design, architectural stalwarts Herzog & de Meuron (creators of the Beijing National Stadium, amongst others) have created a collective “fuck you” to everyone who said high rises in the US would be a thing of the past after the 9/11 attacks. It looks like hundreds of Neutra houses stacked on top of each other in a random and infinite manner, and with floor to ceiling glass on every level, it is a voyeurs dream. Sculptor Anish Kapoor has also added his personal touch with a commissioned kidney sculpture (below).
Don’t worry about the fact that Tribeca is soon to return to the days of RENT (all together, “how we gonna paaaay…”). 56Leonard is a captivating addition to New York’s skyline. We’ll worry about those repayments later.
